about

It's Friday April 17 and we all had other things we were planning to do today.

Pilot Cloud was set to play its first show in almost 10 years, our first in the PNW and--for the first-time ever--we were going to have a full band behind us. Our venue, Cafe Racer, was generous to let us curate and put together a show on more or less our own terms. We had everything all set in motion before the pandemic hit.

Now like many of you we are sheltered in place as well, adhering to social distancing guidelines. We're finding our own ways to pivot in real-time and make peace with the state of the world today. And part of those efforts is finding new ways to foster a shared experience of making the music we love to make.

Last October Pilot Cloud set out for Astoria, Oregon to spend the weekend in a house of some friends. Inspired by Explosions In The Sky's "The Rescue" and the GY!BE-spinoff Set Fire To Flames, our goal was to use the time to lay foundations of our next record 1000% "in the moment" with each other. Those 4 days in Astoria would be the pseudo sourdough starter from which we'd take the next step in the Pilot Cloud story.

Fast-forward six months and now everyone is forced into quarantine. The world as we once knew it will never be the same again. No one can say with any certainty what's coming next, and making any kind of plans feels more like making a wish. We're all living in the moment, day-by-day, one thing at a time.

So until that "next thing" comes--and because we can't share in the show with all of you in-person at Cafe Racer in Seattle--we're sharing a condensed output from our weekend in Astoria instead. Some of these tunes have continued along via e-mail, others haven't been touched since October, but these 15 tracks (well, 14 + 1 cover) are representative of what we did with our time in town.

This collection of tunes is Pay-What-You-Can, however any monetary purchases will be donated directly back to the Cafe Racer community fund; you should really just Venmo @Cafe-Racer. Door money from our 4/17 date was already poised to be a fundraiser for the venue, so this is a way for you to help the DIY Community from the safety of isolation.

Thank you as always for listening.
We listen and build together.
